Unfortunately, the link didn't make it with the above post, so I'll give it a shot. The diesel electric propulsion system uses a diesel engine(s) to turn generators which in turn power electric motors that turn a drive (or prop) shaft. This differs from other hybrid propulsion systems that require batteries (added weight plus replacement costs) to store the electricity. The advantages of diesel electric propulsion systems include reduced noise, increased efficiency, greater reliability due to fewer moving parts, less space, lighter, etc. These systems are now making their way into smaller applications such as pleasure craft. new answer the same system is also used extensively on train locomotives. you see quite oten 2 or 3 locos but only one puffing exhaust that one is generating electricity for generators on all 3 locomotives
Another new answer: the term "diesel electric" also applies to non-nuclear submarines. When on the surface (or using a snorkel) the boats are powered by diesel engines, which also charge batteries to be used when the submarine is submerged. Diesel engines require oxygen so can't be used when the boat is submerged, and the engines are also noisy, when submarines need to be quiet.
