In Packet switching the packetss are stored and forwarded from primary storage (RAM) while in Message switching the message are stored and relayed from seconadary storage (disk).

In Packet switched network data are transmitted in discrete units of potentially variable length blocks called packets, while in Message switching mecahnism a node recives a message stores it until the apporiarate route is free, then sends it along.

Message switching sends data units that can be of any length. Packetswitching has a maximum packet size. Any message longer than that is splitup into multiple packets.

  • Circuit switching involves setting up a series of intermediate nodes, in order to propagate the sending node's data to the receiving node. In such a situation, the communication line can be likened to a dedicated communication pipe.
  • Message switching involves transmitting the message sequentially from one node to another. Each node waits until it has received the entire message before sending it to the next node.
  • Packet switching involves splitting information into data packets, transmitted separately by intermediate nodes and reassembled when they reach the final recipient.

circuit switching packet switching 1>packet size is fixed. 1>size of the packets are variable.

2>path is dedicated to entire message 2>every msg has different path

Message switching is called a store-and-forward technology because the entire message must be received and stored before being sent on to the next system. email is a good example of this type of technology (the entire email message is sent to an SMTP server before being relayed to another one).

Packet switching involves the breaking down of the message into smaller units, called packets. These packets are then sent one at a time from the sender to the receiver. The packets (or smaller pieces) may be received in any order and are then reassembled back into the original message.

Think of the way the Star Trek transporter works for packet switching; the object is broken down into many pieces and then transported to the receiver, which then reassembles them back into the original object...

Circuit switching networks create virtual circuits from point A to point B, then switch all packets for that communication along the same route. In packet switching networks, each packet is delivered individually on its own path according the current routing tables, which allows packets to be delivered when a router is down. The packet switch cannot ensure packet order, however.
