A brandy is made from fruit whereas a whiskey is made from grain.

Brandy can only be made from distilled wine not just any fruit.

Brandy is made by distilling any fermented fruit juice. Grapes, Oranges, apricot, etc. may all be fermented, and then distilled to make brandy. American fruit brandy's are only artificialy flavored syrups, which should not even be cosidered brandy but a liquer. Whiskey is distilled from fermented grains.

Although they're both spirits, they're made of very different ingredients.

Brandy is made from distilled grapes (or, less commonly, other fruits). It has a more orange-red color and a fruitier taste and smell.

Whiskey is made from fermented grains such as malted barley, rye or corn (in the case of bourbon). It has a more golden color and a more grainy, even woody taste.

Bourbon is a sub category of whiskey. Federal standards, issued by Congress in 1964, stipulate that bourbon must be a grain mixture made of at least 51 percent corn, produced in the United States, and distilled to no more than 160 proof, with nothing other than water added to the mixture (aside from yeast). It must also be aged in new, charred-oak barrels, among other requirements. Whiskey can be made from other grains (e.g. Rye Whiskey).

Bourbon. there is several issues hiding in your question let´s break it down. 1 If it is Bourbon it is named Whiskey not Whisky this is a tradition from Irland followig the new imigrants in US Correct would be American Whiskey .. Bourbon is one of them Whisky from Scotland (UK) is by law defined as grain or barley based destillation up to maximum 95% and then matured a minimum 3 years on oak. Can bourbon be used in place of whiskey?

It depends. Bourbon is a subset of whiskey. Other whiskeys include Tennessee, Scotch, Canadian, and Rye. Using Scotch or Canadian whiskey in place of bourbon would not be advisable because of taste differences. If bourbon is not available, try a Kentucky or Tennessee whiskey like Early Times or Jack Daniels. Happy mixing!

What kind of whiskey is Jim beam?

jimmy beam says it all BOURBON, jack Daniels is not a bourbon it is a whiskey sour and it is made in Tennessee not Kentucky all BOURBON must be a product of Kentucky or else its not BOURBON. Jim beam is smooth for sipping unlike jack Daniels although very similar Jim beam proves to be smoother than jack Daniels and cheaper as well smoother , and at a better price why pay more for a imitation? personally i don't find jack appealing if i venture our of bourbon i would also try YUKON JACK, a sweet yet power full Canadian whiskey which is what JD is whiskey not bourbon.
