Drop D Tuning is where you tune the 6th string (The large E string) Down to a D note, so that it is one octave lower than the 4th string. This is used to create a heavier sound effect. Once in Drop D tuning, you can fret the 4,5,6 strings all on the same fret to produce the chords instead of doing the standard "power" chords.
