Electromagnetic induction if the inducing of electromotive force in another material. We need to back up and touch on a couple of basic things to get this to make sense, so let's get busy.

Any time we cause current to flow in a material, a magnetic field will be formed around the path of current. If we take a piece of wire and apply a voltage, current flows and that magnetic field will appear. If there is any conducting material nearby, the magnetic field that appeared when the current flowed will "sweep" the other conductor. The fact that the magnetic field lines pass through the conductor will induce a voltage in that conductor.

This is the idea behind induction (an induced voltage) and is the basis for Transformers and many motors to work. Oh, and when we generate the initial current flow, there is the phenomenon of self-induction where the original conductor generates a magnetic field that induces a voltage that opposes the initiating voltage.

When current travels through a conductor a magnetic field is generated around the conductor. If the current is AC the magnetic field will expand and collapse. If you wind the conductor into a coil the magnetic field will be stronger. Place a second coil close to the first, so that the magnetic field will expand and collapse across the second coil; a voltage 180 degrees out of phase with the source voltage will be induced into the second coil.

If the current is DC the magnetic field will be constant and the second coil will have to be spun through the magnetic field to induce the voltage.
