The asphyxiation can be to the point of almost passing out or of a milder form. A number of people each year die due to erotic asphyxiation and their partners are charged with manslaughter. Auto-erotic asphyxiation is where a person strangles themselves in order to gain a sexual gratification. All forms can involve having sex or not having sex, the important part is the persons arousal by this and not the sexual activities they engage in otherwise.

Erotic asphyxiation doesn't always involve choking or stranglation, it can be simply cutting off the blood supply to the brain by putting pressure on the carotid arteries but I'm not going to teach anyone how to do it and this too can be dangerous for some people. The decrease in oxygen to the brain causes a type of euphoria and can enhance sexual pleasure but there have been cases where they went too far and caused the heart to stop.
