The disadvantages of euglena are mostly related to its structure and the fact that there is a debate that never ends on whether it is a plant or animal. The lack of routine genetic analysis is the main disadvantage.

Interesting fact about the Euglena...

The interior of the euglena contains cytoplasm (a jelly-like substance).

Another intrestin fact......

Towards the end of the euglena is a star-shaped structure called the contractile vacuole. The contractile vacuole helps the euglena remove excess water, without it the euglena could hold to much water due to osmosis that the euglena would explode.

The problem with Euglena is in the classification. It is not clear whether it is a plant or an animal. Botanist classify it as algae while zoologists refer to it as photosynthetic protozoa.
