Extinction is a basic phenomenon (event, incident) of learning that occurs when a previously conditioned response decreases in frequency and eventually disappears.

Basically, if you taught your dog that it was time to eat by ringing a bell and then giving him food he would run up to you excited that he was going to be fed every time he heard the bell. If you continued to ring the bell without giving him the food he would eventually forget that you taught him that the bell means dinner time. When he forgets this and no longer associates the bell with food it is called extinction.
