The width of the fabric on the bolt might be 36" or 45" or 60" or maybe even 72". These top and bottom edges of the fabric are called the selvage edges. These edges are finished as they are fabricated (woven or knit or whatever) so as not to not ravel or come undone.

Normally this fabric between the selvedges is usable in the garments however some times even the selvedges are also used in the making of garments.
