Nightingale defined nursing as "the act of utilizing the environment of the patient to assist them in his recovery" (Nightingale, 1969).

Although her theories were thought up many years ago, many of them still hold true today such as:

· —Keeping the air clean and keeping the air from sick people to getting to the nursery (Nightingale, 1969, p. 13)

· —Importance of hand washing

· —"To wash with soap and soft water is, therefore, desirable…" (p. 95)

· —Noise reduction around patients

· —Feeding and bathing of patients

· —Adequate lighting
