∙ 14y agoThere are more uses for freeware than can be listed here. Almost every way you can use a computer has some type of freeware available. While the software may be free to use, it usually is not free to resell to someone else.
Some Software Marketing Categories:
- Commercial - Licensed outright, usually no demos (however, more commercial companies are offering demos). You pay the license fee and get to use the software, based on the licensing terms. The publisher or author retains ownership rights.
- Shareware - Licensed by offering a free demo (usually with some features disabled or something added you really do not want). After you pay the license fee, you receive a fully-functional version you can use according to specific licensing terms. The publisher or author retains ownership rights.
- Freeware - Software you can use for free without paying a licensing fee, based on the related license agreement. The publisher or author retains ownership rights.
- Open Source - Software you can use for free without paying a licensing fee. This kind of software often includes the source code, so you can change the software to meet your needs. Ownership depends on the terms of the specific open source agreement. Usually, there is no specific ownership associated with the software.
- Public Domain - This is software that the original author or publisher has released for anyone to use. There is no license fees associated with the use of this product. Re-sell rights technically belong to anyone, but it would be best to check with an intellectual property lawyer before you try to sell a license for public domain software to anyone else.
NOTE: Unless you hire someone to write a custom program for you, ownership rights usually remain with the author or publisher. When you purchase software you really are purchasing a license to use the software, not to actually own the software.
