it is very simple in how it works but the best way to understand how it works would be to see a diagram of a bridge rectifier with the current directions marked out on it

DC rectifiers are diodes connected in a specific configuration. Sine they're similar to one way valves, if you think in terms of water through a pipe, they only allow electricity to flow in one direction. There are two types of configurations, half-wave (which uses two diodes) and full wave (which uses four diodes. Depending on your application, one may be preferable over the other.
Placing diagrams here wouldn't be efficient, so I suggest you `Google` rectifiers on the internet for more information.
