Firstly gold is a soft metal so alloying it makes it stronger and increases the time it takes to wear out. Secondly it is cheaper as you can double the "amount of gold" by using half the gold per ring or necklace and having half of the other metal (cobalt, silver, copper, zinc, palladium or nickel are common) thus increasing the profit.

Gold is not made as it is already in its elemental state. Gold is processed and refined from ore containing small amounts of gold.
