Gold is used for rings, watches, necklaces. Its main use is mostly jewelry, but gold leaf is used to decorate some foods, and gold also is used in a lot of high end electronics because it is a good conductor. Gold is useful in making ornaments, decorative linings and in electrical contacts for better conductivity.
The primary reason gold is used in everything from jewelry to electronics (its not conductivity here, both silver and copper are far better conductors than gold and much cheaper) is gold's resistance to corrosion.
Colloidal gold is sometimes used as a treatment for gout.
what is gold used for?
I'll take a stab at an answer.
Gold is a very good conductor of electric current and is highly resistive to corrosion. Silver is a better electric conductor but is more corrosive. I hear that platinum may be better at one or the other (conductivity or anti-corrosive.)This property makes gold a great plating metal for electrical connectors. Nearly all high-quality cable-connectors and circuit-card connectors are gold plated. Even with it's high resistivity to corrosion, a connector can still fail. That's why (I think) connectors in the space-shuttle use platinum. Normally your home computer is not a life-supporting device so if a card needs to be reseated, you may just lose an email you were typing. Many times that a connector fails in a computer is just after moving it - like you just had it at the shop to be repaired and you got it home and it didn't work. So you take it to the shop again and it is repaired it 2 seconds. I know this because I am a computer technician, so a better answer may be given by someone with different experience.
