Grain alcohol is made from a food product such as corn or wheat. It is what is most commonly consumed. Wood alcohol is (obviously) made from wood and is fatally poisonous to humans.

Ethanol (grain alcohol) is also deadly, if you drink enough!

Grain alcohol is drinking alcohol (ethanol). And wood alcohol is also known as methanol, a substance that is deadly to humans (found in antifreeze and fermented wood. Do not drink methanol... it will kill you).

Ethanol is the only alcohol used for human consumption to cause intoxication (other than small traces of esters and fuel oils.)

Why is ethanol called grain alcohol?

Ethyl alcohol (C3C2OH) known as ethanol in the IUPAC nomenclature is called grain alcohol as it is traditionally produced for distillation to pure alcohol by the fermentation of grain derived sugars. The name separates it from methyl alcohol (C3OH) called methanol which is derived from the fermentation of cellulose as is sometimes called wood alcohol.

Alcohol that can be grown on farms?

No, alcohol as such cannot be grown on farms, although for wine, grapes are grown in vineyards as they lend flavour to it. Likewise for beer, agriculture plays a role in growing the grain that is required for the beverage. Methanol (wood alcohol) also comes from a crop that is grown (trees). But the alcohol is not itself grown; it is produced from the crops that are grown.

What is the difference between grain alcohol and rubbing alcohol?

Difference In Grain and Rubbing AlcoholIf memory serves me correctly, grain alcohol is derived from the fermentation of various grains, with the most common being from corn, and it's safe to consume. On the other hand, rubbing alcohol contains isopropyl alcohol (which is a chemically made alcohol), and usually contains additional water and sometimes glycerine, and isn't intended to be substituted for either grain or wood alcohol. To drink it would make one very ill and may even be lethal, or cause blindness. In other words grain alcohol is not equal to rubbing alcohol. period.steph says no.

How can wood alcohol be synthesized?

Wood alcohol is methanol and its chemical formula is CH3OH (often abbreviated MeOH). It is also known as methyl alcohol, wood naphtha or wood spirits. It is called wood alcohol because it was once a byproduct of distillation of wood. It is now produced from carbon monoxide, carbon dioxide, and hydrogen directly in a catalytic industrial process.
