This is my first assignment question for my teaching course, I take the word holistic to mean the fact that everything within the early years foundation stage interlinks with each other, and that no one subject stands alone. For example the fact that you cannot achieve any of the specific subjects of teaching (literacy, mathematics, understanding the world, creative and expressive arts) without achieving the the prime subjects first (personal, social and emotional development, communication and language, physical development). I think that's what it is but don't take my word for it as I have not long started my teaching course.
