Hooverisms are what people called the bad things during the Great Depression. The entire U.S. population (more or less) blamed Hoover for the depression so they made up clever nicknames and put Hoover in front of it

Hoovering is a term that has been adopted to describe when an abusive individual goes and suckers back their victim into the relationship by promising them whatever they can or whatever the victim wants in order for them to return. Often it's associated with Narcissism but really hoovering is a practice that humans in general do not just abusers and victims. Many neurotypical individuals will recycle through exes It just depends on the individual. Narcissism seems to have been attached to it by some of the cartoon language let's gets used in order to describe behaviors but it's not exclusive to narcissists at all. Basically it's when the narcissist realizes that you're moving on they will suddenly start throwing all kinds of positive attention your way to either draw you back into the relationship or to keep you from leaving it. The idea is that victims are so addicted or trauma bonded to the narcissistic relationship that all it takes is contact and the narcissist can get them back. To me it's a disempowering term because it makes it sound like victims are completely powerless to get away from the abuser but many have adopted it and use it exclusively with narcissism. They say that it can be either positive or negative attention that the narcissist gives they might try positive and if that doesn't work then they might try threats to get you to return. But it's always at the point where they believe that they're losing control of you and that you are exiting the relationship forever. That's when you'll see the Hoover occur.
