Hummus is a middle-eastern food composed of chickpeas, or garbanzo beans, and Tahini, a paste similar in texture to peanut butter that is made from sesame seeds. Hummus is typically eaten with pita or other flat bread.

To make hummus, no cooking is required -- just a food processor. You can use hummus as a sandwich spread, as a veggie dip or on crackers

The chickpea (also garbanzo bean, Indian pea, ceci bean, Bengal gram) is an edible legume of the family Fabaceae, subfamily Faboideae. Chickpeas are high in protein and one of the earliest cultivated vegetables; 7,500-year-old remains have been found in the Middle East.

Is raw chickpea toxic?

One answerNo. Raw chickpea's are not toxic. They are used in a dip called hummus. Another answerRaw chickpea's are toxic, but the "chickpea" that the above anwswer is mentioning is NOT the same chickpea eaten in this country or any other developed country. In India, where food is often scarce, some people have resorted to eating a non-edible pea known as Lathyrus sativus. See Related Links.
