Imperialism is basically the formation of an empire.

It is more specificially the creation and/or maintenance of an unequal economic, cultural, and territorial relationships, usually between states and often in the form of an empire, based on domination and subordination.

It occurs when one country takes control (sometimes aggressive, sometimes passive) over a country. This occurred widely throughout history as the conquest of weaker cultures by cultures that were more powerful or more technologically advanced. Military imperialism generally ceased following the two World Wars, the formation of the United Nations, and the eventual demise of the Soviet Union. So-called "economic imperialism" is a separate and continuing but equally contentious policy.

Imperialism, as defined by Dictionary of Human Geography, is "the creation and/or maintenance of an unequal economic, cultural, and territorial relationship, usually between states and often in the form of an empire, based on domination and subordination."
Imperialism refers to a policy of extending the power of country through a military force or through diplomacy.
Imperialism is the hegemony of the colonialism over small countries or nations.
