Abraham's descendants are the modern day Arabs and Jews. In the Bible God promises to bless Abraham and his descendants as an appreciation of their faithfulness. This covenant is the root of the modern day religions of Judaism, Islam, and Christianity.

If you believe in one male God, then, apparently this is the beginning of that belief in the region of ancient Mesopotamia. Many Gods and Goddesses were worshipped, feared, and prayed to for fertile crops (this was an agricultural society), health, prosperity, ward off evil, and win wars.

The significance of a singular God making a convenant with a human, Abraham, begins a new era in religious belief and practices. This event spawned Judaism, Islam, and eventually Christianity, and all it's manifestations.

Unfortunately too many wars have been waged in the name of these and other religious beliefs.

God's covenant with Abraham included the following significant promises:

- a land-the land of Canaan.

- a great nation- the Jewish people.

- material and spiritual prosperity for Abraham and his seed

- a great name for Abraham and his offspring - they would be a channel of blessing to others - friends of Israel would be blessed and anti-Semites would be cursed.

- all the families of the earth would be blessed in Abraham, pointing forward to the Lord Jesus Christ, who would be a descendant of Abraham.

This covenant was renewed and enlarged in Gen 13:14-17; Gen 15:4-6; Gen 17:10-14; and Gen 22:15-18.

Abraham is considered by the Jews to be their father, he is the first of three patricarchs - Abraham, Isaac and Jacob.

God made two covenants with Abraham (Genesis ch.15 and 17). They are important to Jews because in these covenants God promised that Abraham would have descendants to carry on his teachings. Thus, in effect, this marked the beginning of the permanent Jewish tradition.See also:
