The short answer is: 'awesomeness', but luckily there is a long answer that's significantly more detailed.

Most generally, beer is an alcoholic beverage made from fermented grains. This differentiates it from wine (fermented grapes), mead (fermented honey) and other products of fermentation. When it comes to drinking things, people have been very creative!

The grain used varied historically, but I'm sure you're interested in what's in beer NOW, so we'll talk about that.

Barley is the main grain used, and results in the product we know as beer today. Wheat is an ingredient in many beer styles as well. Other grains like rice, sorghum, and so on, are considered adjuncts- they are there to add fermentable sugars and not much else.

Grain is malted and mashed, which releases the sugars contained in the grain into solution, to be used later by the yeast.

The second thing that makes beer beer is hops- specifically the flowers of the hop plant. Hops add bitterness, flavor, aroma, and preservative quality to beers. Different varieties of hops do these things with varying characteristics.

Next we come to water, of course, which makes up most of the beer. The water used to make the beer is actually important, since water contains a lot of things that impact the flavor of beer. In many ways the water a region has access to determines the style of beer that the region is known for.

Finally, yeast. These are the little buggers that eat the sugar you get from the malted grain, and produce alcohol as a side product. The process is called fermentation. Depending on the style and how well the beer is filtered, yeast may or may not be present in the finished product, and may or may not have an effect on the taste of the beer. Some beer is unfiltered and continues fermentation in the cask.

And even more finally... is pretty much anything you want. A lot of people put a lot of stuff in beer, and the lines are quite blurry. Fruits, spices, other liquors, wood chips, bacteria (if you're Belgian or English), and so on. Basically, if it tastes good, it's been done. And taste is subjective, so expect lots of things to be done.

Prost!

The ingredients used in brewing beer depends on the type of beer you are brewing and the specific recipe. All beers use hops and malts for flavoring and yeast for fermenting. You can look up the recipe for your favorite beer online to find all the ingredients needed.
