It is helpful to understand what the government allows in feed or to be used in conventional production:

  • Dairy cows - antibiotics, pig & chicken byproducts, hormones (for growth), pesticides, sewage sludge
  • Beef cows - antibiotics, pig & chicken byproducts, steroids, hormones, pesticides, sewage sludge
  • Pigs - antibiotics, animal byproducts, pesticides, sewage sludge, arsenic-based drugs (growth hormones are prohibited)
  • Broiler chickens - antibiotics, animal byproducts, pesticides, sewage sludge, arsenic-based drugs (growth hormones are prohibited)
  • Egg laying hens - antibiotics, animal byproducts, pesticides, sewage sludge, arsenic-based drugs

== == Fats, preservatives, sodium, sugar and white flour. All these are ingredients that help make fast food cheap to produce and serve, and convenient to buy without requiring much preparation. They also, coincidentally, lead to pleasant feelings of satiation and yield strong, agreeable flavors. What they don't do is provide real nutrition to the body -- it gives you plenty of fat, some of which you burn up over time, and lots of carbs with very little fiber or vitamin content. Essentially, if you were to make a list of all the things that make a food healthy and beneficial, this list would be exactly the opposite.

fast food is unhealthy for a variety of reasons. first and foremost, much of it is deep fried and it's usually full of preservatives. the cheese used in many fast food restaurants isn't "real" cheese, but instead a cheaper, goopy "cheese food" some fast food restaurants (I won't name names in interest of legal matters) use the lowest possible grade meat available, meaning it barely passes FDA standards. In any case, excessive consumption of red meat is unhealthy, and much fast food is red meat. Bacon is also a fatty, salty processed meat. sodas and other soft drinks - unless they are "diet" or "zero" - contain large amounts of high fructose corn syrup which contains an incredible amount of calories and simple carbs (complex carbs are the ones that are good for you, like the ones found in bread and cereal and fruit) next time you're in a fast food restaurant, check their nutrition board. you'll probably be shocked at just how many calories and grams of fat are in many popular burgers. There are healthy options in fast food restaurants, like grilled chicken, salads, baked potatoes, chili, mandarin Oranges, yogurt, and lower-calorie or sugar free beverages. Generally common sense will tell you what on the menu will be healthier for you.

McDonald's menu consists of foods that are high in fat, salt, sugar, and calories, but low in fiber and vitamins and minerals. A Big Mac with a medium fries contains about 1000 calories, which is half of a normal 2,000 calorie diet in one meal! Fast food is something we should limit ourselves to because they are very unhealthy.

salads aside, in a scale from one to ten being ten the unhealthiest, most fast foods rank to about eight and a half.
