fireworks normally consist of a fuel that burns (such as charcoal), a colorant that colors the fire (like strontium) and an oxidizer that makes everything burn faster (such as potassium nitrate). the colorant can be skipped if no color is desired. this is a very simplified version. depending on what you want the firework to do different chemicals need to be added in different ways to produce different effects. hope this helps.
