Integrism

is a not very nice term used by different people for different reasons. It is very confusing and not a specific legal term - in other words, it is not carried in any Catholic dictionary or the Vatican website. It was originally used by Modernists to describe those who were loyal to the Magisterium

during the time of Pope Pius X. Since then it has more recently been applied by "liberal" Catholics to the far right wing often described as traditionalist, those who are "more Catholic than the pope", so to speak. If you are a Christian, you would better spend your time trying to pray well, and follow Our Blessed Lord without worrying about labels and such.

This is from the Fish Eaters Traditional forum:

This term was originally coined to describe those who elevated theological differences to differences in dogma, by degrees.

The integrist confused that which was the faith, with that which expressed it.

Today it used as a pejorative to "describe" those who adhere to traditional Catholicism. It is used most often by conservative Catholics who feel threatened by traditional Catholics' claims.

It describes those who separate the Holy See from the governance of Catholic faith, especially where it concerns the Latin rite Mass and the controversy between the Normative Mass, and the Mass of the 1962 Missal.

"The term "integrism" is not a new term. One Catholic source places the coinage during the pontificate of Pius X and his successor after the former condemned modernism.

The term implies "extremism" -- whether it is on the right or left of the spectrum (political, religious, etc.). In any case it is pejorative and derogatory when used in the modern lexicon.

One Catholic conservative or neo-Cath states that "there are degrees of Integrism, and not all are culpable, as Dietrich Von Hildebrand has noted, since many have no intention of challenging the authority of the Pope..."

Conservative and N.O. Catholics label traditionalist Catholics as "integrists." Traditionalists fire back and call them "neo-caths" or "liberals."
