Iron ore lumps: size 10-40mm Iron ore fines: Granular size of up to 10 mm for up to 90% of the cargo. While lumps are crushed to 5-20mm size in crusher, normally 30% fines (waste) will be generated.

The reason lump is preferred is that when it is fed into a blast furnace for steel-making, its particle size allows oxygen or air to circulate around the raw materials and melt them efficiently. The fine iron ore products have first to be processed into what is called sinter, otherwise it will effectively smother the air flow in the blast furnace.
