Hearing voices is commonly described as : auditory hallucinations: an experience not present in real life and perceived through the ears. This is in contrast to visual hallucinations (eyes), olfactory (nose), tactile (touch), gustatory (taste).
One must differentiate between a hallucination which is an experience iof hearing in the ear someone is talking, or a group of people talking about you in clear day light, and even in the presence of others, or music FROM Intrusive thoughts": these are ideas that keep repeating themselves in the mind not in the ears of the person.
Auditory hallucinations can occur in the context of schizophrenia, illicit drug use, dementia, delirium (confusion).
Intrusive thoughts mostly occur in obsessive disorder.
