You can refer to the process as getting counseling, or therapy, or seeing your psychiatrist if the mental health professional you are seeing is a medical doctor with a specialty in mental health. Sometimes people will refer to any of these visits as 'seeing my shrink'.

There are different kinds of mental health professional. A medical Doctor Who specializes in psychiatric medicine is a psychiatrist. A psychiatrist can prescribe various medications that are effective against symptoms of major illnesses like depression, anxiety and various kinds of psychosis. Psychosis is a kind of mental illness where reality testing is faulty, and people suffering from this kind of illness may experience hallucinations and other very troubling symptoms. Psychiatrists can and do talk with patients about their mental and behavioral difficulties, but MD time is valuable, and people do not routinely have hour sessions with a psychiatrist weekly. It is more common to have psychiatric appointments for 15 or 20 minutes, once every two or three months, and these visits are usually in the context of medication follow-up. Time between appointments varies with the nature and severity of the illness.

There are other mental health professionals who are clinical psychologists. They have a PhD or a PsyD, and have training in psychological research. Many are also trained in various forms of psychotherapy. In most places, PhD psychologists cannot and do not prescribe mental health medications. There are some places where credentialed psychologists do have prescribing privileges.

Clinical Social Workers and Licensed Mental Health Counselors are Master's level therapists who are specially trained in a wide variety of psychotherapy methods and techniques. They are licensed by the state to perform psychotherapy, and very often they are the therapists that people see on a weekly basis for therapy. The fact that they are not PhD's and that they do not prescribe medications does not make them 'second rate' regarding mental health; they will often be as skilled or more skilled in the process of psychotherapy as other professionals who have specialties beyond therapy, like the psychologists and psychiatrists mentioned above. It is a matter of need and convenience.
