The majority of cases of lupus fall into the mild to moderate category. If those patients follow their treatment plan they can expect to live a normal life span. The rarer cases of life-threatening organ involvement are harder to treat and control, but there is no data available because lupus manifests itself in so many different ways and organs. Lupus patients are generally at higher risk for cardiovascular events because the inflammation that accompanies the disease also causes inflammation in the blood vessels which then leads to plaque build up.

The overwhelming majority of people with lupus can expect to live a normal life span if they follow their treatment plan, have regular medical monitoring, and are proactive about their general health. The three leading causes of death from lupus are uncontrolled infection, organ failure and cardiovascular events (stroke and heart attack). Good management and monitioring can prevent deaths from these reasons for the most part.
