Linguistics is the scientific study of languages.

The area of the study includes specific branches such as: socio-linguistics,Historical linguistics, phonetics, stylistics, etymology, syntax,Cognitive linguistics.

Linguistics includes learning theories and not the mere exercise of learning foreign languages.

Linguistics studies the why and how of learning a language

When a native speaker learns a foreign language it is learning the basic grammar and sentence structures and vocabulary but the the scientific approach to the studies, e.g., the grammar, syntax, and so forth is a linguistics approach . This approach makes it much easier to understand as how to use a language in different contexts. For example, when translating a scientific paper one must be aware that scientists write in a very different way from spoken or written language and style as in fictions by a novelists.

Linguists are people able to communicate through more than one language. If the person can speak two languages, they are known as Bilingual, however if they can speak more than two then it would be multi-lingual.
