The iPhone 3GS running iOS 4 can automatically switch between portrait and landscape orientations in many areas of the iOS interface.
This can be tremendously useful. For example, many people find that viewing Web pages is better in portrait mode, but typing a URL into the address bar is much easier in landscape mode.
There are many cases, however, when you'd rather have your iPhone stay in portrait mode even when it is tilted to the side. In these instances, you can easily lock your iPhone's orientation so it will no longer rotate.
Follow these simple steps to lock the orientation of your iPhone 3GS:

The key containing a lock symbol with the number 9 in it is a "number lock key". It's usually displayed on the keyboard and is lighted when number lock or "num lock" is activated. When number lock is deactivated, your number pad becomes a direction pad containing arrow keys, page up/down keys, and home/end keys for cursor movement. Many "old school" users still use the number pad for directional movement, however, there usually is no need with a dedicated arrow pad and mouse functions.

You must have the Scroll Lock on. Press the Scroll Lock key to turn it off.
The orientation lock can be switched with the slider next to the volume control, or in the settings menu.
