There are two parts to a monsoon; the summer monsoon and the winter monsoon.

In the summer monsoon, the land in a tropical location becomes warmer than the ocean. This creates rasing air currents called updrafts. This draws moist air off the ocean. This air then rises and cools, dropping its moisture in the form of heavy rain.

In the winter monsoon, dry air is drawn off the land, resulting in little or no rain.
