With (Today Dec.9, 2010) gold at $1380 per ounce and palladium at $740 per ounce, gold would still be more at 14 karat (about 58% gold, 42% other metals). It is what is used in those 'other metals' that makes gold be white gold or yellow gold.
Gold is more expensive at the time of writing. Palladium is about $820 an ounce while gold is about $1,340 an ounce.

Silver, not palladium, is mixed 50/50 with yellow gold to make white gold.
Gold is more durable than Silver. Silver reacts with Sulphur dioxide in air and gets blackened. This is not the case with gold. Gold rarely reacts and does not easily make compounds.
HCL or H2SO4 will dissolve iron and not gold, platinum or palladium
Pw 18K means Palladium White gold. Normally white gold is made by mixing yellow gold and nickel to give it the white appearance. Palladium White gold is yellow gold mixed with palladium (from the platinum family) to give the white appearance. Out of 24 karats, 18 parts are gold and 6 parts are palladium.
Nickel/palladium and gold.
Palladium is similar in appearance to white gold, but since it does not have nickel as one of its ingredients, palladium is hypoallergenic. Palladium is considered a lightweight metal, similar in weight to 14K gold. Palladium metal can coat a ring or the ring can be "950 palladium," 95% palladium and 5% ruthenium, with possibly other traces of metal.
P4 is a mix of metals(gold, silver, platinum & palladium)that has the look of white gold, but is much more affordable. It can be rhodium plated(what they do with white gold to keep it lustrous),but it holds it's tone better than silver does. The SR on the ring is probably the vendor's stamp. One that I know of that does P4 items uses the stamp SRI. It is sold through many finer jewelry store chains. Hope this helps you.

White gold is a mixture of gold and platinum. white gold can also be made with gold and either nickel manganese, or palladium. it depends on the application needed for many rings gold and nickel is used in this ratio. 90 wt.% gold and 10 wt.% nickel because it is very hard and durable. Gold and Palladium is good for gem setting because it is fairly maleable. Yellow gold can also be alloys with other metals such as copper. these other metals can increase durability or maleabiltiy. You can tell how much gold is in the alloy by the caret system 24 caret is pure gold. For more info see related link..
