Because New York City was less dominated by religion as was Boston and even to a certain extent, Philadelphia, new immigrants found New York City as a place more open to receive new people from Europe. This population was eager to find work in factories. As the population grew so too the manufacturing. This in turn increased port traffic. Between 1790 and 1820, New York City surpassed both Boston and Philadelphia in population and trade.

During the 19th century the growth of New York City was due to a number of factors. One was Immigration. The city had employment opportunities in factories and on the docks of the city. The industrial revolution, 19th century stage, created factories and jobs. The port of New York City was excellent and a deep water one, allowing for more shipping operations that led directly to the Atlantic Ocean. By comparison, to reach the docks of Philadelphia, ships were required to move up the Delaware River. Also, unlike Boston, there was more religious freedom in New York.
