Karl Friedrich Hieronymus von Münchhausen was a German baron who lived in the eighteenth century. He's famous for his crazy - and obviously fabricated - stories of wild adventures he had experienced while serving in the Russian army, which are preserved in the book The Surprising Adventures of Baron Münchhausen.

The Münchhausen syndrome is a psychiatric disorder where the affected makes up various illnesses i order to draw attention to him/herself.
