Mustard gas or 1,5-dichloro-3-thiapentane is a yellow-green substance that has been used during chemical warfare since 1917. It gets its popular name from the odour it gives off in its impure gaseous state, similar to that of mustard or horseradish. However, in its pure form, mustard gas has neither odour nor colour, and is a liquid. It was first used as a weapon at Flanders during WWI and has been used in numerous conflicts since. In 1925 it was banned from use during warfare by the Geneva Chemical Weapons Protocol.

Mustard gas is a very powerful gas known to form large blisters over the skin. Victims of mustard gas exposure can experience relentless itching and skin irritation as well as terrible pain and disfigurement. Mustard gas is also well known for causing mutations and cancer to its victims, due to its alkylating properties. At higher concentrations, mustard gas can cause bleeding and blistering in the respiratory system, destroying mucous membranes and causing pulmonary edema, a condition where abnormal amounts of fluid build up in your lungs. Most often victim's of mustard gas do not die, although in cases where more than 50% of the skin is exposed, death is likely.

Chemically speaking, mustard gas is an organic compound with the formula Cl-CH2CH2. When used in combination with other chemicals such as hydrochloric acid, mustard gas can be particularly deadly.

Today mustard gas is used as an anti-cancer drug to treat both Hodgkin's and Non-Hodgkin's lymphoma.
