Narcotic drugs are classified into four main groups:

Opioids and opioid like agents that include codeine, morphine, tramadol and heroine. Except for heroine, they are used as potential pain-killers for moderate to severe pain. Fentanyl, buprenorphine, oxycodone, hydrocodone, propoxyphene and hydromorphone are also opioid drugs.

Cannabinoids include THC (tetrahydrocannabinol), hashish and marijuana. They are not indicated as theraputic pain killers because of their potential for addiction and high risk of abuse.

Hallucinogens include PCP and similar agents. Due to side effects like hallucinations, flash backs, paranoiam and delusions, they are almost never used theraputically as pain killers.

Stimulants include amphetamine, dextroamphetamine, methylphenidate and methamphetamine. They are used as prescription drugs for the management of neuropsychiatric illnesses and issues. Some stimulants, like methamphetamine, cocaine and Ecstasy. are illegal and are not used therapeutically. Side effects of all stimulants can include addiction potential, withdrawal symptoms and anxiety, agitation and mood disorders with prolong consumption.

Some common narcotics are the ones used for ADHD, such as ritalin, adderal, concerta, and dexadrine.

In the U.S., narcotics include the opioids and cocaine. Opioids include pain medications such as morphine and other derivatives of opium like codeine and heroin. Cocaine, crack(cocaine) and it's derivatives are extracted from the coca plant which is commonly grown in tropical South America. ADHD treatments such as ritalin, adderal, concerta, and dexadrine are not defined as narcotics by the U.S. government.

Narcotics are a major class of drugs themselves, also known as Opioids which is interchangeable with Narcotics both meaning narcotic pain killers derived from the Opium poppy (Papaver Somniferum). They can be naturally present in the Opium poppy (such as Codeine or Morphine), be synthesised in the lab from a compound which is naturally present in the Opium poppy (such as Oxycodone and Heroin, which are made of Thebaine and Morphine respectively, both naturally present in the Opium poppy) or they can be completely synthesised in the lab from scratch (such as Fentanyl and Methadone, both having little resemblance to any naturally occuring Opioids and both being made from chemicals which don't occur in nature).

In the past and in some regions and countries even to this day, the word narcotic is wrongly used to imply all drugs, but narcotics are only those drugs that resemble narcotic painkillers such Morphine in it's effects, and many of them are legally prescribed for the treatment of pain.
A narcotic is a drug made from or derived synthetically from opium.

Examples include opium, morphine, heroin, codeine, hydrocodone, fentanyl, meperidine, oxycodone, tramadol, nalbuphine, pentazocine, and many others.

It does not include benzodiazepines, barbiturates, or alcohols. Nor does it include other illegal drugs, such as PCP, LSD, mushrooms, methamphetamines, or ecstacy.
Narcotic drugs, and I assume you are speaking of those that are legal to use by prescription, would be things like vicodin,

morphine, codeine (which is the kicker in Tylenol #2,#3, #4) and all the Xanax

and Ativan;

we also have things like Demerol, Phenergan,

Darvon, Darvocet.

The list is longer than your right arm, and you can go to any Walmart

and find a drug book with a much more comprehensive list. Competent

and ethical doctors will not write large scripts for these medications. They are unsafe to be taken for long periods of time. We have a huge problem in this country with people taking these medications for legitimate reasons, initially, and then getting too many refills, becoming addicted, and then finding illegal means to gaining access to even more.

"Narcotic" was originally a term use to describe drugs that induce sleep, i.e. opium/opiates, barbiturates etc. But now American law enforcement use the term to describe all illicit (illegal) substances, because they're not very clever and get confused easily, not really what you want from people in authority. Back on topic, a few examples of narcotics (as the term is used today) would be heroin, cocaine, (meth)amphetamine, cannabis, MDMA (ecstasy), ketamine, PCP and so on.
