The National Rural Health Mission (External website that opens in a new window) (NRHM) is a government scheme that aims at providing valuable healthcare services to rural households all over the country. It specially focuses on the 18 States of Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, Bihar, Chhattisgarh, Himachal Pradesh, Jharkhand, Jammu and Kashmir, Manipur, Mizoram, Meghalaya, Madhya Pradesh, Nagaland, Orissa,Rajasthan, Sikkim, Tripura, Uttarkhand and Uttar Pradesh.
The major objectives of the National Rural Health Mission are:
Decrease the Infant Mortality Rate and maternal mortality rate
Provide access to public health services for every citizen
Prevent and control communicable and non-communicable diseases
Control population as well as ensure gender and demographic balance
Encourage a healthy lifestyle and alternative systems of medicine through AYUSH (External website that opens in a new window)
The mission envisages achieving its objective by strengthening Panchayati Raj Institutions (-1 MB) (PDF file that opens in a new window) and promoting access to improved healthcare through the Accredited Female Health Activist (External website that opens in a new window) (ASHA). It also plans on strengthening existing Primary Health Centres, Community Health Centres and District Health Missions, in addition to making maximum use of Non Governmental Organizations.

Swarnajayanti Grameen Swarojgar Yojana (SGSY), one of the flagship programs of the RD Ministry with the focus on self-employment by reaching out to Self Help Groups, launched in the year 1999 is being restructured as the National Rural Livelihoods Mission (NRLM), to be implemented in a mission mode across the country. The restructuring comes in the backdrop of the fact that out of the estimated 7 crorerural BPL households, 4.5 Crore households still need to be organized into SHGs. The mission aims to reach out to all the rural poor families (BPL families) and link them to sustainable livelihoods opportunities. It will nurture them till they come out of poverty and enjoy a decent quality of life.
