To colonize a colony you need a colony ship (which requires a level 4 shipyard and level 3 impulse) All you need to do is find an empty planet slot on the galaxy view, and then type that in as the co-ords, and send your colony ship (no other ship, as they will simply be sent back, keeping any resources they are carrying) to it. Don't send any resources, as they will simply dissappear.

You must be trying to colonize a planet which is from 1 to 3 or 13 to 15 in galaxy for these planets you need astrophysics in level 5 till 7 so you have to colonize a planet between 1 to 12
