The schedule for a neonatal nurse will vary depending on the hospital's policies and the number of nurses available in the neonatal unit. Often nurses will work 12 hours on and 12 hours off 3 or 4 days per week, then get 3 or 4 days in a row off.

Neonatology nurses work within the NICU (neonate intensive care unit) or within the nursery. This type of nurse needs to be highly skilled and trained in the development, and the disorders and diseases that high risk infants get. This type of nurse often needs to be very caring and compassionate as the mother is going through a very hard time when they know that their baby is in the high risk category, and will need some time to adjust to this.
