One of the most famous ship anchors in the Philippe Cousteau Anchor Museum [Museo de Anclas Philippe Cousteau] in Asturias, Spain, is from 'Nuestra Señora de Atocha'. The 'Atocha' was loaded with New World treasures [copper, emeralds, gold, silver, tobacco, etc.] for its return trip to Spain. On September 6, 1622 a hurricane drove the ship onto the coral reefs near Dry Tortugas about 35 miles [56 kilometers] west of Key West. The hull was badly damaged, and the ship quickly sank. Everyone onboard drowned except for three sailors and two slaves. The 'Atocha' lay lost for 363 years until American treasure hunter Mel Fisher [August 21, 1922-December 19, 1998] and his son Kane located the ship after searching for 16.5 years.
