As of midafternoon on April 28, 2009, the "spot price" (more on this later) of silver is US$12.43 per troy ounce. Sterling silver is 92.5% pure, giving it a theoretical spot value of $11.50 per troy ounce. However, the "spot price" is not actually the price that you can buy and sell silver at. Normally, you would expect to be able to buy from a shop at perhaps $0.50 over spot and and sell to a shop at perhaps $0.50 below spot, the $1.00 difference between those prices being how the shop makes its money. In the current environment, however, the price of physical silver is higher than it's spot price - you should expect to be able to sell silver to a shop at spot, or perhaps even $0.50 above spot, but you will probably have to pay $1.50 to $2.00 above spot to buy it from a shop

Also note that most dealers will take a dollar or so off the price they will pay you, so you might only get $30 or so for 1 troy ounce if you were to take it in right now. However, beware of places that only will pay you $20 or so, a lot of heavily advertised services will rip you off, it is best to take it in to your local jeweler, a refiner, etc. and not to mail it in to a nationally advertised TV dealer.
