Paraphilic infantilism is the desire to wear diapers (nappies) and baby clothing in order to experience sexual gratification. It differes from a sexual interest in diapers (diaper fetish) by the fact that the "adult baby" wishes to be treated as a baby and is not merely interested in the diapers themselves as a sexual object but in the whole aspect of being like a baby. Participants dress in baby attire and may be bottle-fed, breast-fed, fed baby foods, rocked to sleep, have their diapers changed and generally be pampered as if they were an actual baby. Both men and women engage in this paraphilia and the part played by the babies adult minder (termed a mother or a father) may be a man or a woman. Participants sometimes describe that they get a feeling of athe lifting of responsibility and stress relief from their day-to-day lives and find a feeling of tranquility from having everything done for them. Some participants continue the fetish outside of the home and may wear diapers and other baby items under their work clothing. The internet has provided a forum both for image and videos of the fetish and also for retailers of baby clothing made in adult sizes to satify the market for such items. Some participants engage in punishment or humiliation fantisies, coercion and BDSM. Infantilism is different from pedophilia in that infantilism is not concerned with the sexual desire for a real infant but in the sexual desire to be an infant. Whilst many participants engage in a relatively harmless form of the fetish, psychiatrists do feel that if significant impairment or distress is caused by the fetish for a period greater than six months that psychotherapy is indicated.

When Did the Term Infantilism Appear in Psychology?

Paraphilic infantilism, usually just called infantilism, was formally defined by the APA in DSM IIIR in 1987. It may have resulted from the gradual adaptation of the term 'psychosexual infantilism' to apply specifically to cases involving diapers and/or babyhood, as opposed to a general lack of psychosexual development.

What is the first known case of true infantilism?

"Infantilism" usually refers to paraphilic infantilism, the desire to wear diapers and be treated as a baby. In his 1967 book, "A Textbook of Psychosexual Disorders," Clifford Allen mentioned a 1910 case described by Petlow. However, the diagnostic criteria for paraphilic infantilism would not become formally established until the publication of DSM IIIR in 1987. Since these criteria included clinically significant distress or impairment, many AB/DLs (Adult Babies and/or diaper Lovers) have this desire, but do not meet these criteria. The intent of these criteria is to separate those who might benefit from treatment from those who would not. Most AB/DLs would not benefit from treatment. It is expected that DSM 5 will redefine paraphilic infantilism to include those who don't experience clinically significant distress or impairment. Given that infantilism is a variation or deviation, it is meaningless to try to define "true infantilism" versus "false infantilism."

How common is infantilism?

The prevalence of paraphilic infantilism is uncertain. A 0.1% ballpark estimate made by "Enfant Mel" around 1993. This estimate was initially distributed over USENET and has been echoed or reproduced by others. http://understanding.infantilism.org/population_estimate.php

Is it common for some people to deliberately poop their pants or use diapers?

No, deliberately pooping one's pants or using diapers as an adult is not considered common behavior. This could potentially indicate a fetish or a psychological condition known as paraphilic infantilism or diaper fetishism. If this behavior is causing distress or interfering with daily functioning, it is recommended to consult a mental health professional for evaluation and guidance.

Why would a teenage boy want to pee and poop in diapers and be treated like a baby?

== == = Paraphilic infantilism = Paraphilic infantilism is a paraphilia characterized by the desire to wear diapers and be treated as an infant or toddler. One who engages in infantilistic play is known as an adult baby (AB). About one in three adult babies is also a diaper lover (DL),so they are collectively known as AB/DLs. The majority of infantilists are heterosexual males. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Paraphilic_infantilism As someone with experience with a situation like this, it may be hard to understand, but you must be supportive. This is not something most teens would want to discuss or have anyone find out about, and it can be very stressful for the teen. Talk to him, ask what he likes about wearing diapers and acting as a baby. These actions may not be something you can tolerate, but let him know that in an understanding way, getting angry or upset would only make the problem worse. Most of all listen, let him explain things without being judgmental.

What is another word for acting like a baby?
