Plateau is type of relief.

Generally, it's name for every larger flat terrain 200 and above meters from sea level.

Earth's largest plateau by surface is Tibet in Asia.

They are formed through many thousands of years, by exogenic processes.

Sun rays, ice, water or wind tend to destruct Earth's surface, so some hills and mountains are becoming shorter, and in their areas large plateaus are formed.

Note that plateaus are usually formed on very old continent masses, and high mountains are placed on the younger masses.

The main cause to that is very simple - the older mass - the more flat terrain as a result of longer exogenic effecting.
