Positive reinforcement is when you reward a behavior to encourage it.

Negative reinforcement is when you discourage an unwanted behavior.

It is NOT when you add or subtract a consequence from a situation.

hope this helped....

*Edit

I edit this as you are incorrect with Negative reinforcement StarGaizer42, Negative Reinforcement IS when you remove a stimulus or consequence to encourage good behavior. i.e. If you do this now(good thing), you wont have to do that later (bad thing)

How are positive and negative reinforcement similar and how are they different?

Positive reinforcement is when you reward someone (person, child, pet, etc.) when they do what you want them to, and you ignore them when they do what you don't want them to do. Negative reinforcement, I believe, is when you punish someone for doing what you don't want them to do. As far as their effectiveness, it seems that a combination of both is good. Positive reinforcement is essential, and negative reinforcement helps to round it out. It is, however, important to be careful with negative reinforcement because if you put too much attention on someone while trying to enact the punishment (IE, time out), then, subconsciously, they may enjoy even the negative attention and thus you will have a counterproductive effect.

What is the principle of positive Reinforcement?

REINFORCEMENT (Increasing a particular behavior, pattern of learning): There are two types of reinforcement: 1. Positive reinforcement: when a [desired] act is reinforced by being rewarded. This means the act will be reinforced because the subject believes it's what is expected of them, but the act itself does not necessarily have to be interpreted as positive. 2. Negative reinforcement: an act will be reinforced due to removal of a negative stimuli. For example, a baby may cry when left in the dark. If the parent returns and turns on the light to comfort the baby, then the baby will learn that the act of crying will remove the unwanted condition of being left in the dark. This will lead to an increase in the baby crying. NOTE: this is different from punishment: The subject will decrease the behavior in order to avoid the punishment. For example, you may punish a child for hitting someone by sending them to their room. Doing this enough times will cause the child to stop hitting in order to avoid being sent to their room.

Examples of positive reinforcement?

Answer To tell a dog "no", you should say it loud, clear, low, and "mean", but not too mean that the dog cries and runs. If you do it too often, the dog will begin to think that the negative tone means nothing. "Phooey" also works in a negative tone and I use it on my dog. It's better to reward the dog for learning his mistake than for punishing him for doing it. There is a lot more if you look it up on WikiHow.comansw2. In training, there are two forms of reinforcement, carrot and stick. (Negative and positive reinforcement.) Both have their place. With children, positive reinforcement should have a larger place.

What is the difference between positive reinforcement negative reinforcement and punishment?

Positive reinforcement is to add something to motivate a child to do the same thing again. While negative reinforcement is to remove or get something for the child to aim for the reward by completing the task. Punishment using positive and negative reinforcement can be very effective. If someone does something wrong, you want to set them a task that will help them make better decisions next time. To do that, you have to work out consequences. The best example I have is from my days of substituting kids who were in detention. When they first arrived, they had to write a paper outlining what they did and how they would avoid doing it again. It was amazing how many times it took them to honestly say what they did (without blaming others or circumstances) and to develop a plan for the future. It worked because there were no excuses.

What is the difference between punishment and negative reinforcement?

Punishment is any event that decreases the likelihood of something to occur while reinforcement is any event that increases this likelihood. Now negative reinforcement is going to increase the likelihood of something occurring by taking away an aversive stimuli. For example, if you do your homework now, you won't have to take out the trash later.Exploring Psychology by David Myer
