Definitions of Religion
1) Religion is the adherence to codified beliefs and rituals that generally involve a faith in a spiritual nature and a study of inherited ancestral traditions, knowledge and wisdom related to understanding human life. The term "religion" refers to both the personal practices related to faith as well as to the larger shared systems of belief.
2) Generally, religion is an organized, formal system of belief in God, usually associated with payment to a religious leader of the organization. It has been said: that religion is the cultural phenomenon caused by tales of a real personal relationship with the true God, that can be traced by to the first true relationship between a man and His God.
3) Religion is a term given to a spirituality that has core beliefs, that are represented in ritual, that are recorded in sacred texts, that answer the fundamental questions of the human condition.
4) Religion is a search for answers to questions that may or may not have any.
5) In my words, religion is an irrational belief in supernatural entities and a waste of time. You may as well believe that the Tooth Fairy is real, the Tooth Fairy has the same probability of existing as any 'God' worshiped by a religion. To quote Robert Pirsig's statement in Lila that "when one person suffers from a delusion it is called insanity. When many people suffer from a delusion it is called religion".
6) A religion is a practice of faith.
Examples of Religions
All of the following can be referred to as a religion: Buddhism, Hinduism, Christianity, Islam, Judaism, Wicca, Eckankar, Raëlism, Zoroastrianism, New Age, Unitarian Universalism, Jainism, Shinto, LaVeyan Satanism, Scientology, Taoism, Yoruba, Druidry, paganism, Juche, Cao Dai. Take your pick.
Purpose of Religions
1) 'Religion' should all be able to tie into one we shall no longer fight over power.
2) I believe that religion is just something that helps us along. It's like a parental figure. Something that can guide you along, step by step. We all know that following somebody Else's footsteps is easier than going along by yourself. I believe that instead of filling someone's head with opinions and biases we could display honest and true FACTS. It's like debating. The judges isn't going to pick an answer like the one above.
3) Religion is also not all about corruption and murder. Yes, there have been wars and, yes, there have been arguments but some people forget that there is also love and honesty. Christianity, Islam, Hinduism, etc. I think that they were all meant to enlighten people, to help them. You forget that it was MAN that perverted part of these religions. It wasn't the idea of it. Answer: Religion is a worship of a god goddess or someone all religions have temples and homes of the monks. Christian is the most common of all the religions.
4) Organised religion's purpose is to create more believers so that they can continue to prosper and grow fat on the ignorance and superstition of the masses.
