Usually when someone speaks of "salt" they are referring to just one KIND of salt: Sodium Chloride, which has the formula NaCl (one sodium atom and one chlorine atom).

There are other kinds of salts, however. As a general description salts are the products of a neutralizing reaction between an acid and a base. Some - like sodium chloride - are inorganic (no carbon atoms). Others are organic such as sodium acetate. (CH3COONa). Some are pretty simple - with just two atoms like sodium chloride. Others are more complex with multiple atoms such as the previously mentioned sodium acetate or like the potassium sulfate (K2SO4) used in many fertilizers. Some salts don't even have any metal atoms in them - for example Ammonium acetate (NH4CH3CO2)
