∙ 11y agoThe food particles that reach the pyloric region of the stomach must be very small in order to fit through the pyloric sphincter and drop into the duodenum. The number 1 role the stomach plays in digestion is mechanical digestion, or churning and mixing of the food bolus into chyme. Chyme is the ground up pieces of food mixed together with gastric juice (HCL and gastric secretions), and is the form food takes as it enters the duodenum. Very little chemical digestion occurs in the stomach
