Some electrical outlets, especially the ones for outdoor use or for indoor use near water sources, are equipped with a built-in circuit breaker called a 'Ground Fault Interruptor' (GFI for short).

Other built-in safety features of some electrical outlets include child safety protections that prevent children from inserting things like knives, etc. into them.

In the UK a standard 3-pin plug has a fuse as its main safety device. Fuses can be 3A, 5A or 13A depending on what is connected. Other fuses are available, chiefly 1A and 7A.

In the 3-pin socket there is an sprung arrangement that covers the live and neutral sockets, that is opened by the prior entry of the longer earth pin.

On many plugs the plug is shaped to stop fingers touching the current-carrying conductor when the plug is pulled out. Also on many plugs the current-carrying conductors are covered by plastic along part of their length.

Can you use a 220v outlet to plug a 110v electronic device into?

You cannot directly plug a 110v device into a 220v outlet. This can cause damage to the device or even create a safety hazard. You would need a voltage converter or transformer to safely convert the 220v outlet to the appropriate voltage for the 110v device.
