Answer Quite basically, secularism refers to the belief that religion has no place in the day to day activities of governing bodies. eg. the view that public education and other matters of civil policy should be conducted without the introduction of a religious element.

Secularism does not reject or deny religion. In fact, it makes it possible for all religions to be recognized and respected by keeping religion out of public affairs. It has been erroneously aligned with godlessness by the religious extremists whose intent has always been to erode the barrier between church and state. Many people who participate in various religions are also secularists.

"Secular" is a term used to describe a person, thing or idea that is not driven or conceived by religious motives. The lack of religious ideology may be actively anti-religious in its intent (such as an atheist group) or merely without any religious intent one way or the other (such as a McDonald's). Many fundamentalist people of religion view any secular institution in a negative light, ie "If you aren't with us you're against us."
