there are 3 types of pastas that i know of,
1: penne ( PEN - A) it is apasta like a tube except it has a tip at the end of each end.
2: Ditali ( DI - TAL - E) it is a small version of a tube.
3:Rigatoni ( RI- GA - TOE- NEE) it is basicly a longer version of ditali.
Hope this helps.
Among the many types of tubula pasta, or pasta cylinders, are:
Cannelloni: large, longer tubes, generally filled and baked, usually with straight-cut ends.
Macaroni: small tubes, straight-cut ends
Penne: small tubes with diagonally-cut ends
Pennette: smaller penne
Pennoni: larger penne
Rigatoni: short, ridged tubes.
Ziti: short, smooth tubes.
The terms, small and large here are used to describe the width, or diameter, of the tubes. The terms short and long are used to describe the length of the tubes.
Cannelloni is often made with flat sheets of pasta (like lasagna), cooked and rolled around a filling and then baked.
All pasta tubes except spaghetti and ziti are made either rigati (ridged lengthwise) or lisce, or liscio(smooth). Rigatoni, of course, is ridged.
The term mezzi is sometimes used to describe very short tubed pasta, as in
The smallest tubular pasta is spaghetti, which is also made as a solid pasta. Bucatini (which comes from Italian bucato, 'pierced hole') is a term commonly used in Rome to describe tubular spaghetti.
Some approximate Italian pronunciations are:

Cannelloni: cann-eh-lon-i
Lasagna: lahss-anya, lerss-anya
Liscio: lee-sho
Lisce: lee-shay
Macaroni (maccheroni): macc-er-oni (macc-yer-on-i)
Penne: penn-eh
Pennette: penn-ett-eh
Pennoni: penn-oh-ni
Rigati: ree-gah-tie
Rigatoni: ree-gah-toni
Spaghetti: spag-e-tee
Ziti: zeet-i
Contributors with greater knowledge on the subject, particularly of the very many Italian terms - and pronunciations - might like to add to this.
